I’m far from the country type. I’ve never been one to go strolling in the mountains. I’ll do it from time to time but if I had the choice, I’d rather veg at home. The good old great outdoors is far from my realm. I grew up in the city. My idea of the country is cabins and fly fishing, being attacked by bears and slapping myself from endless mosquitoes. Keep in mind, I live in on Maui and we have none of these things that I just mentioned. Sad, I know.
We finally made the annual trip upcountry. We rarely ever go there because quite frankly, there’s nothing up there that really intrigued us; or so we thought. We’ve heard of the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm before through word of mouth, pictures, and their commercial. But we’ve never been there before. So that was the choice and we were on our way.
From start to finish, the farm is absolutely gorgeous. And I really mean it. I try to look at myself as a guy’s guy, but this place was beautiful. Everything about it spoke of serenity; the view overlooking south and central Maui, the colors, the breezy upcountry weather and of course the smell. There was a wide variety of lavender throughout the farm. Every species had a sign which educated the public. The novelty store sold everything lavender. From lavender scones to lavender infused coffee, to lavender lotions and potpourris, and everything in between. What I loved that may seem a little “off” is that they hand out complimentary lavender colored umbrellas to make your stroll a bit more enjoyable. That was something I’ve never seen before.
