OUR 12 HOUR GETAWAY

I’ve been in dire need of a getaway. It didn’t need to be far. It didn’t need to be lavish; it just needed to be away. It’s just nice to get away from the hustle and bustle we all know as life. Every so often I need that mental refreshing we get when we go on vacation. And for the last 24 hours, I was on vacation and I did get my refreshment.

The name of the hotel was the Kahana Beach Resort. We were given a 3 night stay there by my in-laws though I only stayed for one night. The check in was quick and uneventful and we were given our keys to room 702. Once you walk in, you immediately notice the view. It was simply beautiful. I’ve stayed in a lot of hotels over my life and the view from here was amazing. The amenities of the room were the basic necessities which were just what we needed.

Anabelle and I made it a date night. We had won a $50 gift certificate awhile back in a raffle to this high end Italian restaurant, Basil Tomatoes. We’ve been holding onto it for a few months so this was the perfect chance for us to use it. Anabelle and I got all decked out and enjoyed one of the best meals we’ve had. The ambience was great. It was an open aired atmosphere that was very quiet but not where you’d have to strain your ears to have a conversation. Our server started us off with their signature basil tomato bread with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar to dip it in. We’ve had bread tons of times before but never with the oil and vinegar. Anabelle loved the balsamic vinegar while I opted for the oil. We dined on 2 baskets of bread before our entrees came out. I got the stuffed pork chops as Anabelle got her pasta primavera.

Before I continue, I see on our table something that I’ve always wanted to try. I’ve never had the chance because here on Maui, there’s been no restaurant that has them accessible. But for the first time in how many restaurant outings, I had the chance to use a pepper mill on my food. My palette is far from sophisticated but it’s just something that I’ve always wanted to do; and tonight was my chance.

Back to the food. At Basil Tomatoes, the food is amazing. We were both pleasantly surprised to see such big portions at a fine dining restaurant. We enjoyed our dishes so much that both she and I never offered to share with one another. It was that good. The serving staff was excellent. I like to judge a restaurant by how empty my water glass gets. At Basil Tomatoes, it never got empty. For me, that’s a testament to how good this restaurant is.

After stuffing ourselves to our limit we rolled out of our booth and proceeded to the grocery store to get Anabelle some food for her self anointed apartment. Ironically, we both had a sudden yearning for a hot batch of malasadas. We got back to the hotel, put away the groceries and began to make our malasadas. Luckily for us the first time was the charm. There’s nothing like a hot, fluffy, and sugary piece of goodness we locals call malasadas. We ate them faster than we made them as we watched The Hangover to close out the night.

This was a much needed getaway from the world. From start to finish, both Anabelle and I enjoyed our stay; from the hotel room to the dinner, from the malasadas to the movie. All this went on with the best company I could wish for.
